The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is now recommending COVID-19 booster doses for everyone 16 years and older. Booster doses are safe, effective, free, and available at all Southern Nevada Health District COVID-19 vaccine clinic locations.
Who should get a COVID-19 vaccine booster?
- People 12 and older who received the Pfizer vaccine can receive a booster 5 months or more after they received their second dose.
- Adults 18 and older who received the Moderna vaccine can receive a booster 5 months or more after they received their second dose.
- Adults 18 and older who received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine can receive a booster 2 or more months after they were vaccinated.
If I need a booster shot, does it mean the vaccines aren’t working?
No. The COVID-19 vaccines currently approved and authorized in the United States remain effective at preventing severe illness, hospitalization and death, even against variants like the Delta variant. However, there is data that shows their protection is starting to decrease, especially among certain populations. Booster doses are an important tool to help us stay ahead of the virus.
About additional doses
People age 5+ who are moderately or severely immunocompromised and have completed the two-dose series of the Pfizer vaccine should get an additional primary shot of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine. People age 18+ who are moderately or severely immunocompromised and have completed the two-dose series of the Moderna vaccine should get an additional primary shot of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine. For people in these groups, an additional dose can be administered at least 28 days after second doses have been received. More information is available at this link. No additional primary shot is recommend for people who received Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen vaccine.
The COVID-19 vaccines continue to be effective at preventing severe disease, hospitalization and death, even against variants. The science is clear that people who are fully vaccinated have significant protection from COVID-19 infection and serious illness. The Health District continues to encourage everyone to get vaccinated.
